| History |
The Italian Language School was founded in 1969 with financial support from the Italian
Government for the purpose of fostering an interest in Italian language and culture and of giving
children of Italian background an opportunity to learn it in a school environment. |
| Other Information |
Italian is a Romance language derived from Latin which was spoken in the area of Florence around
1300. At that time other, similarly derived languages, were spoken on the Italian penninsula. These
became the Italian dialects of today.
Florentine, however, was adopted by literates throughout the penninsula as the new language of
literature in place of classical Latin during the Renaissance. It remained the language of literature
and culture until Italy's Unification, when it was adopted as a National language. Most Italians today
speak Italian and an Italian dialect. |
