| History |
Te Reo Maori is the traditional language of the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand).
The name of the school is Nga Tamariki o Te Rere o te Tarakakao. This translates to The Children
of The Flight of the Godwit Bird (Tarakakao). The Tarakakao is a bird native to New Zealand
whose migrating journey all around the world parallels many of the members of our group. There
is also an adult Kapa Haka group.
The school was formed nearly 20 years ago to pass on the many traditions within the Maori culture.
We strive to teach our traditions and culture to the children. This includes: te reo (language), arts
and craft, weaving, poi making, haka, performing arts, and carving. We hold many wananga
(workshops over weekends) to teach these things.
The classes are made up of children Kohanga Reo (toddlers/preschoolers) through to Rangatahi
(teenagers). The school is associated with the ACT Ethnic Schools Association, Queanbeyan
Council, and the ACT Government. |
